SPECIAL EDITION: MAKEUP LOOK ON THE OLDEST DAUGHTER!

    sophia13 (2)sophia13 (1)

In a Hell Freeze’s Over moment, my daughter said yes to me doing her makeup AND posting it here on the blog! We took a few products that I had planned to review and decided to use them in one fell swoop. She was very relaxed about the whole idea, meaning she didn’t want to put her hair down or change her clothes. You know how adolescents are! Normally she is a beauty queen type. So excuse the yellow tee that seems to clash.

We used pop Beauty’s Lid Pastel which looks adorable in the pan. It has six shadows, ranging from white to purple. These can be added to shadow you have on to make them pop a bit more or alone for a more subtle but shimmery pastel look. When added to my daughter’s eye, as you can see, it was more along the lines of where the heck were they? I even wet them for more pigmentation and I still got nada, zip, zilch! I used the green in the crease and the pink on the lid. From the photos it looks like there is almost nothing there. I would not recommend these for anyone. I purchase them from www.hautelook.com but I also think the are available at Target stores. To line her eyes I used an old HIP Studio Secrets liner in Violet. These go on so smoothly. I really should use more of them as opposed to liquid liner! They go on like buttah! Then we applied e.l.f. liquid eyeliner in Stardust, a glimmery, glittery liner that on top of the HIP liner looked adorable.

For the cheeks I wanted to try the new Revlon Photoready blush in Pink Rose. I use this on myself all the time and like it a lot. I figured it would look great on her, right? My daughter has a completely different bone structure than I do and blush doesn’t really look that great on her yet. She is only 12. I used the pink color on the apples of her cheeks and it looked somewhat pink. Then I tried to contour but it didn’t really look that good. I highlighted the upper part of her cheeks with the highlighter and it looked somewhat better. All in all, the blush really wasn’t her thing. Maybe a cream blush would look better on her. She could control the color better and I would recommend a bright pink tone so that it could be toned down a little by powder. For her lips she picked out a Hard Candy gloss I had sitting around. She loves Hard Candy and always buys their products. This one is the Plumping Serum volumizing lipgloss in spark ( a bright shimmery pink). My daughter has cute lips that are almost perfectly shaped and don’t need lipliner. I am soooooo jealous! I applied the gloss and it looked really good on her lips. The pink was a nice color, not too loud, just enough shimmer. I would recommend this for adults and kids alike.

Unfortunately, out of everything I reviewed here, I would really only recommend the e.l.f. liquid liner and the Hard Candy lip gloss. I like the blush for myself but I think it works great for my cheek bones. Anyway, I hope this was helpful for your preteen. Yes, my daughter is really into makeup. She takes after me of course!

MIRACLE SKIN TRANSFORMER TREAT & CONCEAL *EYE & FACE*

    101_0390101_0392

A few months ago I had the wonderful opportunity to try Miracle Skin Transformer for Body, then for Face and the other day I actually won the concealer on Facebook. I am so excited, as I have heard wonderful things about this product. I received the light, which looks perfect for my fair skintone. I have a few areas that need concealing, so I plan on using a foundation that has minimal coverage (not naming names). I usually use a brightener under my eyes, so I am hoping this will take the place of that without looking too heavy. I also have some areas on my face that need concealing (acne scarring that is slowly going away with peels). I hope it covers there and lasts all day. Okay, those are my hopes, let’s see how this baby works!

    101_0400101_0401101_0396

I used the concealer under my eyes and next to my mouth. I always use concealer or brightener under my eyes, because they tend to be much darker there. As you can see it worked extremely well. And you really just have to use the tiniest amount. Squeeze out a small pin head amount and divide up between both eyes. Then I applied some to the left over redness I have around my mouth (after I was sick I developed some breakouts, neglect of skin. Ugh.). In this third photo you cannot see any trace of them. The MST Treat & Conceal covered perfectly!

Not only does the product conceal, but it treats the skin as it conceals, hence the name. It has plant-derived collagen and Vitamin F to minimize signs of aging. Salicylic acid treats blemishes by exfoliation, vitamin K treats dark circles and broken capillaries under the eyes, white rose and chamomile calm the skin and are anti-imflammatory. Miracle Skin Transformer Treat & Conceal is available in stores and online at www.miracleskintransformer.com and  www.sephora.com. It is $36.00. I really like this product and find it is one of the best concealers I have seen in a long time, mainly because it conceals so well on the face, which I find most concealers DON’T do very well. That makes me very happy.

emerginC BLEMISH CONTROL TINTED

    101_0357

I want to admit something here: I am 40 years old and I still suffer from acne. Ugh. I never had it as a teenager. I have it now because of personal reasons that I won’t go into but I can usually keep it in control. Recently I was VERY sick and couldn’t even lift up my head much less manage a skin care regimen. So, my skin broke out big time! I had the opportunity to try emerginC’s blemish control tinted. Available for $29.00 on www.emerginc.com, www.skinstore.com, www.dermstore.com and various salons nationwide.

This treatment is super potent, drying treatment that will rapidly reduce current breakouts for oily and acne prone skin as well as all skin types. It contains camphor, sulfur and zinc oxide to control acne breakouts. Camphor is calming and soothing, while also being an antimicrobial (kills germs). Sulfur has antifungal and antibacterial properties and is also an antiseptic. Basically it also kills germs too! The zinc oxide is soothing and calming and has been shown to eliminate acne in as soon as one day.

It should be applied 1-2 times per day, shake the bottle first. The directions say to apply to breakouts directly but I find that if you open the bottle after shaking and use a Q-Tip to apply the solution it works much better than just using your hands. I find that you may need to apply it a couple of times to get good coverage.

I like the product, it has strong ingredients that kill acne. That is extremely important for an anti-acne product. It covers okay, but you may find that if the blemish is very large you will need a concealer too. I would advise putting this on first though. You can even use it at night for blemishes, the coverage part is not as important as the antibacterial ingredients that are in the product, which do help to zap blemishes!

Behind the Scenes at a Photoshoot

My guest post for Books, Crafts & Pretty Things:

I get lots of questions about what really goes on behind the scenes at a Photoshoot, and people are always interested in whats behind the gloss & glamour.

The most important stage in any photoshoot is planning. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. There are lots of factors involved, and the first is to determine what style you would like - for me, it's usually centered around Hair & Makeup styles. Once the style is determined, you have to locate a model and photographer to suit the style chosen.

From here on - this means lots of emails back & forth to confirm that everyone is on the same page. Location, date, call & shooting times, clothing, and props are just a few things that needs to be organized. It's really important to record all of this information - or you will risk looking unprofessional should you turn up to a photoshoot with the wrong equipment or forgetting props!

To help keep me on track, I keep a Photoshoot Booking Form, Model Profile Sheet & any Inspiration photos for the shoot.

Once all of this is locked in - the fun begins! I like to do a trial run on a friend or myself if I'm trying out a new style or products I haven't used before, to ensure on the day there are no disasters!

The day before a photoshoot I get my cases packed - this involves making sure all of my makeup brushes are cleaned, that I have disposable makeup sponges, mascara wands and lipgloss wands, ensuring all hairstyling tools are in working order and I have any extras needed such as false eyelashes or rhinestones. This is where all that planning helps - if you know exactly what you're doing on the day, there is no need to carry around excess equipment you won't use! When travelling, I usually take something along the line of this:

Another important factor to consider is making sure you have adequate lighting, power supply and most importantly seating - having the model at the wrong height can cause back problems - posture is so important in a physical job! I also have a tall chair I can take along to bookings if I'm unsure if there will be a comfortable makeup room.

Upon arrival at a shoot, I set up all of my equipment so it is within easy reach and I have everything I need - which never finishes as neatly as it starts!

Once the model arrives, its my turn to get to work, and then I get to watch all the magic happen and be on hand for touch ups!

That ends all the work for me! I'll pack up all my equipment, and wait until the photographer has finished editing all the photos! The final result will end up something like:

BRINGING BACK A CLASSIC: URBAN DECAY’S ALICE IN WONDERLAND PALETTE!

    101_0322101_0323101_0320101_0321
When you have as many palettes as I do, you have to go back to the older ones now and then to get some use out of them. Today I wanted to use a classic: Urban Decay’s Alice in Wonderland palette. I was a big fan of Tim Burton’s interpretation of the book and I really loved Urban Decay’s palette. The colors are phenomenal, bright and they scream: use me!

    101_0324101_0331101_0353101_0347101_0334
I decided to have a bright eye look today. Even though I have greenish-blue eyes, bright blue eyeshadow does look good on me. I Vorpal (shimmery medium gray) in the crease and Mushroom ( dark warm shimmery gray) on the outer part of the lid and under the eye. I put Alice (bright shimmery blue) and put that on the majority of the lid. I then put White Rabbit (shimmery, glittery cream) under the brow. Note: some of the colors are recycled Urban Decay shadows with new names. I don’t really care, as they colors are great and the payoff and pigmentation is wonderful! I lined the upper lid with Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Electric (shimmery turquoise) and for mascara I used MAC Haute and Naughty in Black.

On my cheeks I pulled out a really old Stila blush, Summer Bloom and used the Peach portion. On my lips I used MAC’s A Perfect Day from their Naturally collection. It is a peachy nude.

I think that sometimes we need to mix it up a little. I am tired of neutrals. I am looking forward to the spring color collections, especially MAC’s, as I see they are coming out with some cute stuff. January and February are always hard months. We find ourselves wishing for warm weather and lighter clothing. At least we can play with makeup to help ease the blues a little!
